Safety of the women passengers would become better by this!!

The news is that MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation has started to install panic buttons in 500 buses and funds from Nirbhaya corpus are being used for this project.  In the MTC bus routes where women passengers are more, panic buttons along with cameras are being installed.

In the MTC routes like 25 Anna Square-Poonamallee, 76V Koyambedu-Siruseri, 70V Perungalathur-Koyambedu etc, panic buttons have been installed now. Superb piece of information is that soon this work would be extended to 2800 MTC buses in Chennai. An alert gets passed to the command and control centre of MTC when a woman passenger presses the panic button. This centre is present at MTC headquarters on Pallavan Salai.  With the help of the CCTV cameras fitted to the panic buttons, a team deployed at the centre would be able to monitor live video feeds and would send them to police helpline 100 to get help from the nearest police patrol vehicle.

It was mentioned by a regular MTC bus user that there were many mobile apps for safety purposes but the response time is very high. This would give the offender enough time to escape from the spot before the alert reaches the concerned authorities. She hoped that this panic button would be highly effective in nabbing the offenders.

Transportation activist, Mr. Anbalagan spoke about how the panic buttons would not only increase the safety of women but also would help in locating the person who is at fault involving clashes with bus drivers and conductors etc. It is essential MTC must create awareness regarding these panic buttons because many press have started to press the panic buttons out of curiosity and for an effective surveillance system many false alerts in the beginning stages would not be good.
