Foot over bridges in Chennai are breeding grounds for women abuse!!

There are many FOB or foot over bridges in the Chennai city and these are constructed with the objective of providing safe commuting for the public. But are these foot over bridges in Chennai really safe for women?

The answer is NO. It was mentioned by a 23 year old girl 2 months back how she used FOB at Thoraipakkam and how she was blocked by men at the narrow exit points. She added that she escaped somehow and it was a very horrifying experience. Not only she but many women have experienced such horrifying incidents while using FOB in Chennai.

Many women these days prefer to jump over the meridian present in the middle of the road instead of using FOB in Chennai as they find that crossing the road by jumping over meridian is safer than using foot over bridges. The important piece of information is that at least 10 foot over bridges that were present in many localities like Saidapet, OMR, Royapettah the conditions were worse and unfit to be used by women. The foot over bridges had broken liquor bottles plus tipplers passed out with bottles by their sides and men involved in anti-social activities etc. There are no proper lightings also in the foot over bridges.

The FOB’s present along the IT Expressway are also the same. It was brought out by a shopkeeper near the foot over bridge at Thiruvanmiyur that anti-social elements occupy these FOBs from 7pm in the night till morning and it was not possible for women to use the foot over bridge.

The condition of subways is not different from the foot over bridges. The subway that connects east Tambaram and west Tambaram is totally unsafe for women without any illumination. Just a couple of years back, this subway was built at a cost of Rs 3.85 crores is known.

As per a resident belonging to Tambaram it was confirmed that many from Tambaram market and miscreants use the subway according to their wishes. It must be noted that the subways present at localities like Wall Tax Road, T. Nagar, Chetpet, Thillai Ganga Nagar, Palavanthangal, Perumbur etc have witnessed women abuse. The police personnel spoke about how they patrol the vulnerable places and how action would be taken against those persons only when a complaint is given by a woman.  The contact numbers for women`s helpline- 181 and 1091 and SMS – 95000 99100.
