Whats going on in Chennai regarding the cable TV operators and internet providers?

The Information Technology department has issued an order to exempt optical fibre cables from paying the rent. It is now said that Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has directed the cable TV operators and internet providers to pay track rents and pending dues as soon as possible.

For carrying the cables through streetlights, the GCC commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi has urged the cable TV operators to pay the rent plus pending due amount. It was brought out by a release from GCC that the cable TV operators and internet providers would be allowed to carry their cables and optical fibre cables through the street light poles in all the 15 GCC zones. It is noteworthy that the internet providers have installed separate poles to carry their optical fibre cables also.

Information gathered is that the electrical department belonging to GCC has removed 74.6km long cables of the cable TV and internet companies that were unused and for the sake of unpaid rent amount.  In the month of January, the Information department has issued an order directing the civic bodies to stop collecting track rent for optical fibre cables for encouraging the firms plus for the penetration of high speed internet service across Tamil Nadu.
