What is causing a threat to the commuters at Guindy railway station now?

Posted on: 07/Mar/2022 9:21:51 AM
In Chennai, Guindy railway station is one of the important stations and is being used by many commuters to reach their destinations is well known. The news is that 2 pillars of foot over bridge or FOB near the railway track at platform 1 are posing a threat to commuters here.

Information is that the FOB pillar is located at a distance of 2.1m but according to the railway safety manual there must be a minimum distance from the centre of the track and permanent structures be more than 2.36m. It is true that there is no violation of the rules regarding safety standards. Railways had constructed a second platform on the western side of Guindy and Egmore and this was done to provide ease of access to metro stations and bus stands etc. Now, works are going on at St Thomas Mount railway station plus a few other railway stations in Tambaram-Beach in Chennai.

According to a regular commuter, western side of the track was fenced with concrete walls. Point is that after the new platform was built, pillars have become closer to the track and there are chances of commuters hitting while getting down or boarding the trains. Another commuter from Madipakkam spoke about how a section of office goers are yet to use suburban trains. He hinted that there would also be a chance of the 2018 incident that took place at St Thomas Mount station where 7 foot board commuters were killed after hitting a concrete wall abutting 2 platforms at this railway station.
