Chennai High Court: Why tomato prices have not come down even after allotting space for storage?

The Chennai High Court has enquired why the tomato prices have not come down substantially even after allotting space for parking the trucks arriving with tomatoes.

The Chennai High Court has earlier ordered the space allotment of 1 acre in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable/flowers/fruits complex for parking the trucks arriving from other states carrying tomatoes. When this case came up again for enquiry, it was informed that the space of 1 acre was yet to be allotted and only half-acre land was allotted on behalf of the traders.

A petition was filed on behalf of the wholesale market committee informing that 94 cents of space has been allotted and asking an order to be placed against selling tomatoes in this space.

After analysing all the details given in the petition, the judge raised the question of why the tomato price has not come down even after the allotment of space for parking the trucks.

The Traders’ Association Members explained that due to the recent incessant heavy rains, the yield of tomatoes has been very poor especially in the states of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and as such the quantity of tomatoes arriving from other states has reduced considerably.

The judge ordered that the space allotted for parking the tomato trucks be available till the Pongal Festival. He further ordered that in the space allotted for loading/unloading tomatoes in trucks, NO RETAIL SALES MUST BE ALLOWED.
