New decision taken by WRD now regarding water release in Chennai!

Posted on: 15/Dec/2021 9:21:17 AM
Till the end of the north-east monsoon season, WRD or water resources department would be releasing water from the 3 major reservoirs in Chennai city.

There has been rainfall in the neighboring states and due to this there is now steady inflow of water to these reservoirs. Till now, the reservoirs have got storage of 3 tmc of water.

According to a senior official belonging to WRD who is also the in-charge of Poondi reservoir, rains have stopped in Chennai but the Poondi reservoir has been receiving water from other states and this include Ammapalli dam in AP. When compared to 1500 cusecs of water as inflow, outflow is 1000 cusecs now. He hinted that once the rain comes to an end in AP, then the inflow to Poondi reservoir would reduce. At that time, water would not be released from Poondi reservoir.

The WRD would ensure that there is atleast one foot storage capacity in the reservoir till the end of the month of December. It must be taken into account that as on Tuesday Puzhal Lake and Chembarambakkam Dam received more than 500 cusecs of water and 200 cusecs of water was discharged from these.

It was later mentioned by another senior official belonging to WRD that as more than 1000 cusecs of water is discharged from the Poondi reservoir, the water to Puzhal Lake and Chembarambakkam Dam would flow from Thamirabarani River to Sholavaram and then top these water bodies.

He threw light on how the reservoirs have almost reached their full capacities and how till the end of December month one foot free must be set in the reservoirs for emergency till the monsoon season got over. It is now said that if there is no further rainfall in TN and in the neighboring states then the water outflow would come down gradually.
