With so much crowd and air pollution in Chennai city, a visit to an eco-park in Pallikaranai would be superb!! So, next time you feel bored of these and want to relax then you could go to this sensational park.

On Friday, the chief minister of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin grabbed many eyeballs when he opened an eco- park on the marsh lands belonging to Pallikaranai in Chennai. This eco-park is set up on 2.5acres and was constructed at a cost of Rs 20 crores and it has got a walking path and watch towers that would make the bird watchers show interest.

It is amazing to note that Pallikaranai is home to more than 459 living organisms such as plants, birds, fishes, mammals and reptiles etc. Near the marshland here, as many as 176 types of terrestrial and migratory birds plus 50 fish species. 9 snail species, 10 mammal species, 15 butterfly species have been recorded. Approximately 265313 birds have been identified in the marshlands. This was as per the 2019-20 census. By walking along the 2km footpath on the periphery of this park, the visitors would be able to spot birds etc.

According to an officer (who is taking care of this ecological park) belonging to the TN Forest Department, this is the best time to spot birds here. The visitors would be able to spend time here between 6am to 6pm everyday and there are no entry fees as of now. It was mentioned by an officer belonging to the forest department that in future an entry fee of Rs 10 for the kids and Rs 25 for adults might be collected.

As per a visitor, this marshland would help in flood mitigation plus in improving the storage of groundwater. This ecological park has boards showing the details about flora and fauna present.

It must be noted that during inauguration of this eco-park a request was made to announce Pallikaranai marshland as Ramsar site (a wetland site of international importance). It was later confirmed by an officer belonging to the forest department that if the Union government lists this park as Ramsar site then there would be more chances of conservation.
