Across the state of TN, 500 Kalaignar unavagams or canteens, community kitchens would be launched and this was mentioned by Mr. R. Sakkarapani, food minister yesterday.

To run 650 Amma canteens, the Centre must provide 100% financial support under the National Food Security Act. This was also as per the food minister. It must be taken into account that Mr. Sakkarapani was busy in a meeting in New Delhi regarding a kitchen community scheme to address hunger and malnutrition in India.

As many as 650 Amma canteens were set up by the previous AIADMK government to provide food at a subsidised rate for the public. These canteens were supported by the local bodies is known. Till 3rd of September, 1227 tonnes of rice and 362 tonnes of wheat were used by these canteens in the current fiscal year. The surprising piece of information is that nearly Rs 3.5 lakhs is being spent on Amma Canteens every month

For the benefit of the patient attendants and outpatients, Amma canteens are present in all the government medical college hospitals and in the government hospitals that are located in the district headquarters.

The food minister later spoke about how to run the scheme and sustain it successfully. The Union government must provide 100% financial assistance under the National Food Security Act 2013 for providing food to all needy persons.

From 1st June 2021 to 18th November 2021, more than 2.15crore people benefited from the Amma canteen scheme. Nearly 30500 construction workers including migration labourers got benefited,

Truth is that in the Covid-19 pandemic and also in the natural calamities food is issued for free at Amma canteens. Even after the Union government implemented the National Food Security Act in November 2016, Tamil Nadu had retained the universal public distribution system. It must be noted that a litre of palmolein and one kg of Tur dal are being issued to all ration card holders at subsidised rates under the special PDS introduced by the DMK government in the year 2007. Pongal gift hampers of 21 items to each of 2.15 crores PDS cardholders have been announced by the state is known.
