Sensational!! Many students have joined engineering courses in TN now than in the past!!

For the last 5 years, engineering admissions were dull in Tamil Nadu and not many students showed interest to study engineering courses. Times have changed now and in this year engineering colleges witnessed good admission. Fifty nine percent or 59% engineering seats have been filled in TN after 4 rounds of counselling. It must be taken into account that this 59% is 13percent more when compared to last year.
Information is that the number of vacant seats has also come down by more than 21000 to 62683. Just 10 government colleges out of 440 engineering colleges were able to fill 100% of their intake. These colleges are College of Engineering Guindy and Madras Institute of Technology Chromepet etc. Compared to 59 colleges last year, 113 colleges now have filled more than 80% of their seats. This year, 230 engineering colleges have filled more than 50% seats when compared to 139 colleges in 2020. It is surprising to note that 6 engineering colleges were unable to get even one student this time. Less than 20% of seats have been filled by 92 engineering colleges and less than 10% seats have been filled by 56 engineering colleges.
From 27th September to 17th October, TNEA committee conducted engineering counselling in 4 rounds through online mode is well known. Mr. T. Puroshothaman, TNEA secretary hinted that few more students might join engineering colleges soon due to the supplementary counselling process. The superb piece of news is that the online counselling went smoothly this time inspite of many students getting similar scores.
As per Mr. R.M. Kishore, vice-chairman of RMK Engineering College in Chennai it was clear that the positive trend in the engineering admission now has been due to the hiring of the students by the IT companies during the Covid-19 pandemic. He threw light on how the students gave more importance to the colleges than the courses in the last 3 rounds. This has led to the overall increase in the number of colleges with 80% seats filled up now.
According to career consultant Mr Jayprakash Gandhi it was clear that the number of vacant seats might come down to less than 55000 after supplementary counselling. Many students now prefer engineering courses like computer science and engineering, electronics and communication and information technology etc. Courses like mechanical engineering and civil engineering were least preferred by the students now. Mr. Gandhi concluded that more than 100 colleges have only single digit admissions in mechanical engineering this time.
