HIGH readings shown by the energy meters - NOT consumers fault - TANGEDCO

Consumers are paying an excess electricity bill amount for no fault of theirs!!

According to the Tangedco Meter Relay Testing Wing circular, the electronic energy meters might show false excess readings also.

It has been brought to light by Tangedco that under certain conditions including earth tamper- when the neutral cable from power utility side is disconnected or not connected properly then the energy meters would show faulty readings. This cannot be the fault of the consumers.

A circular has been issued by the executive engineer, MRT Wing, Thanjavur to its assessors, wiremen etc and as per the circular it was clear that in case of earth tamper and if there are multiple connections in the premises like apartments and multi-storied buildings, energy metres might record the consumption of adjacent power supply also.

There are many consumers who have raised complaints regarding the problem of excess billing and this circular from Tangedco has come at this point of time.  High readings were cited as the reason for faulty meters that were received at MRT in recent times. The circular mentioned that there are very few chances of electronic or static energy meters showing wrong or high readings. High reading would be shown due to certain conditions.

It is learnt that in case of single phase meters, if the neutral cable from the utility gets disconnected and when the household equipment operated using the consumer’s local earth then high readings would be shown by the meters.  It was said by a retired engineer belonging to Tangedco that out of 5 tamper events pointed out by the MRT wing the utility would be responsible for 4 events. He added that the consumer would be at fault for keeping the magnet. He was of the view that the consumers must not be made to pay for the excess amount for no fault of theirs.
