Limping back to pre COVID days now - Chennai Metro!!

The Coronavirus pandemic has been creating huge issues across the world is well known.

In Chennai, CMRL has shut down the operations of the metro trains for some time due to the Coronavirus pandemic and then began resuming the operations. The number of people using metro trains in Chennai has been increasing. With the lockdown restrictions being eased, the ridership has increased in Chennai.

It is worthy to mention that before the Covid-19 pandemic began in Chennai every day 1.25lakh people used metro trains to reach their destinations on an average. After Covid-19 infection started spreading in Chennai, the ridership went down drastically.

In Chennai, after the metro trains resumed services the average per day ridership was at around 65000 in July, 70000 in August and it touched 90000 in September. When compared to 22.74lakh ridership in August, the metro train ridership in September touched 26.86lakhs. This was as per the statement from CMRL. On 9th September, 1.09lakh passengers used metro trains in Chennai and it grabbed many eyeballs.

It is known that the metro offers a 20% discount of QR code ticketing and trip passes using metro travel cards. It must not be forgotten that a commuter would be fined Rs 200 if he or she doesn’t wear facemasks inside the trains or in the metro stations. This has been followed as a part of Covid-19 prevention measures. For not following the rules, as many as388 passengers have been fined since the month of June and an amount of Rs 77600 has been collected as penalty.
