It is not often that a beach in India gets Blue Tag certification and now Kovalam Beach in Chennai has received this. This has grabbed the attention of many.

This Kovalam Beach is located near Mamallapuram and many come here with their families for surfing, bathing etc. Point to be noted is that Kovalam Beach has been maintained well, clean and environment friendly. This has resulted in the beach getting Blue Tag certification now. Fact is that there are just 10beaches in entire India with Blue Tag certification and Chennai’s Kovalam Beach is one among those.

It is worthy to mention here that to qualify for this Blue Tag a beach must satisfy 33 stringent criterias with respect to environment, water quality, safety, educational, services and accessibility standards etc. The minister for tourism, Mr, Siva Meyyanathan mentioned that the TN government would spend Rs 100 crores in the next 5 years to get Blue Tag certification. The main aim behind this was to promote eco-tourism.

In India, other beaches that have received this Blue Tag certification are Shivrajpur of Gujarat, Ghoghla Beach of Diu, Kasargod Beach and Padubidri Bieach of Karnataka, Kappad Beach of Kerala, Rushikonda Beach of AP, Golden Beach of Puri, Odisha and the Radhanagar Beach of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

According To Mr. Sujeetkumar Dongre, National operator for Blue Tag Programme, it was clear that the Kovalam Beach for the last 2 years has worked hard to achieve superb standards including environmental education and environmental management. He added that the local people and others have been taught the importance of the beach to keep it neat and clean. Truth is that these persons have earmarked a safe bathing area in the beach under the eyes of trained lifeguards, lifeguard towers and a control room, trained paramedical staff for giving first aid etc.
