The WRD or Water Resources department will be very busy in the coming days!!

In Chennai and in the neighbouring places, there are several floodwater channels and waterways that are filled up with vegetation. It is now said that the WRD would be involved in cleaning up vegetation. The WRD would be desilting and clearing floating waste from the waterways in a couple of days. There would be a minimum of 50 machines to be used for this purpose.

The superb piece of information is that this drive would ensure free flow of flood water in the upcoming monsoon season and there would not be any water stagnation. It is revealed that in Chennai city and its neighbouring districts around Rs 7.8crores worth of works (as a part of northeast monsoon preparedness work) would take place. It is known that a total of Rs 11.7crores has been sanctioned for various divisions.

It was later mentioned by some officials belonging to WRD that a total of 42 projects would be taken up to clear debris, vegetation plus other obstructions to ensure free flow of floodwater. As a result, there would be minimised inundation in the forthcoming monsoon season. The WRD has been issued orders to prevent dumping of solid waste in the waterways and get the support of other agencies. This was issued in the recent government order or GO.

To divert sewage to treatment plants and prevent it from polluting waterways, the WRD has been asked to come out with a plan now. As per some WRD officers, steps would be taken to clear and maintain river mouths of 5 estuaries at Ennore, Adyar, Muttukadu, Cooum and Pulicat. To drain out the floodwater carried by the rivers, equipment would be deployed at the estuaries. The officials added that sand bar formation at Ennore estuary would be cleared using Kamarajar Port Trust funds.
