Exponential rise in COVID cases - Patients finding it tough to reach hospitals in Chennai

The hospital beds are in shortage in Chennai and that is well known but what is not known is that even the journey to the hospitals for Coronavirus patients has been tough.
This has led to a situation now where patients going for screening or testing have just 2 options: either wait for 3 to 4 hours for an ambulance or go to hospitals by autos, taxis or buses etc. It must be noted that this could increase the number of cases.
After the RT-PCR test result was positive, a 38 year old woman was admitted to a private hospital. Point is that her waiting time was so long when she tried to take an ambulance from GVK EMRI. A huge amount of RS 5000 was demanded by the private ambulance. She took an auto rickshaw to go to hospital. The issues did not end for her as she was forced to take a CT scan at a private facility. She spoke about how the hospital authorities said they cannot arrange an ambulance and how she had to take an auto to reach a private facility for her CT scan. Truth is that she had to wait for 5 to 6 hours to collect a scan report and then reached the hospital by taking 3 to 4 autos.
The owner of a private ambulance expressed his thoughts. He threw light on how he had to wait for 4 to 5 hours at the government hospitals. It is worthy to note that a 10litre oxygen cylinder that ambulances carry does not last for a longer duration of time. It is not possible to get an auto for Covid-1 patients and their attendants as many auto drivers are not willing to take them to the hospitals fearing the infection spread. An auto driver explained about how he would reject any trip to the hospitals citing Coronavirus infection spread from the patient. He concluded that auto drivers do not have any other option for their livelihood so they have to take these patients to the hospitals.
In addition to the auto drivers becoming vulnerable to the infection, there are also chances that others who use these vehicles could get the infection.
