It has been a long 51 days since the number of active Covid-19 cases in TN has gone past 5000 mark.

It must be noted that yesterday, 15th March 2021 the number of active cases in TN touched 5149. Across TN, as many as 836 fresh cases have been reported. This has been the highest in TN in the last 67 days. The fresh Covid-19 cases have touched 300 in Chennai city for the very first time in this 2021 and there were 317 cases. On Monday, Chennai city’s active case count stood at 2023.

It must be remembered that on 23rd January 2021 active cases in TN dropped to 4984 cases for the first time since 10th May 2020. The cases continued to go down till the second week of February is known. Since then, reports about fresh Covid-19 clusters began emerging almost every day from the districts of Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur etc.

The people dropped their guard as the cases came down plus due to vaccination Poor mask compliance coupled with lack of social distancing etc at many private /public meetings etc have led to the increase in the cases. This was stated by Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary of TN.

Intensified surveillance, contact tracing, testing and isolation etc were done but there was no social distancing and facemasks and these have led to more Covid-19 cases now.

The directorate of public health has mentioned that TN has been testing 65000 people including 12000 around in Chennai on an average. Truth is that the doctors have been asked not to allow Covid-19 affected patients to quarantine themselves at their homes now unless they are young and healthy plus they follow Covid-19 protocols. Intensification of containment measures are being carried out by GCC now. This was brought to light by Dr. T. S. Selvavinayagam, director of Public Health.

Chennai had 3232 fresh covid-19 cases in the first 15 days in the month of January. The Coronavirus cases were decreasing steadily and there were 2186 fresh cases in the first week of February 2021.

It is true that in the last 15 days Chennai had reported as many as 3232 cases and on 23rd December 2020 Chennai reported more than 300 cases. The various indicators like positivity rate, number of active cases plus doubling time of infection etc clearly showed that there is now ris9ing infection rate in Chennai. This was as per an epidemiologist.
