Largest metro train maintenance depot at Madhavaram in Chennai

The Chennai city’s largest metro train maintenance dept would be present at Madhavaram.
It is said that Madhavaram would be transformed into a nodal centre for up-keeping of driverless trains. It must be noted that the driverless trains would be operated across 118.9km of phase-2 in another few years. It is learnt that CMRL has invited bids for the construction of the depot that is expected to come across in a 69 acre plot in Madhavaram Milk Colony. In less than 3 years, the new depot would be making its presence felt and its area would be more than the 64 acre Koyambedu depot.
Information is that with the latest tender invitation CMRL has floated 19 tenders for the construction of 118.9km phase-2 lines and 2 depots. It is worth mentioning here that CMRL selected Madhavaram for the new depot because it would service and maintain a majority of the 112 driverless trains operated on corridor 3 from Madhavarm to Sipcot and on corridor 5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. Trains would also operate on the planned circular route comprising Madhavaram-MMBT-CMBT-Sholinganallur-Adyar-Madhavaram. This route would have a driverless train and it would cover northern as well as southern suburbs at one go inside 150 minutes.
It must be remembered that in January CMRL invited bids for the construction of a depot at Poonamallee and this would maintain the fleet operated on the Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor 4.
The depot at Madhavaram 37 lines for stabling or parking trains, 6 inspection lines for6 car trains, and another 6 workshop lines for 6 car trains. It is mentioned that CMRL would be procuring 70 out of total 112 driverless trains for the 118.9km phase-2 and the remaining would be operated on lease. All major repair and maintenance works would be handled by the depot.
The official shave explained in DPR that the new depot would have infrastructure to maintain rakes with necessary facilities, including workshop for overhaul, unscheduled maintenance including major repairs, wheel profiling, roof cleaning etc for the rolling stocks operational on the corridor plus maintenance facilities for civil- track buildings, water supply signalling and communication, electrical traction and automatic fare collection etc.
