The linking of Mass Rapid Transit System MRTS - operating from Chennai Beach to Velacherry and the several decades-old existing suburban electric train route Chennai Beach – Tambaram – and beyond is so vital that it will make travel far more easily throughout the Chennai Metro City – Add the Metro Rail System and the Chennai Citizens can travel from any corner of the Chennai Metro City to any other corner in a time-saving and comfortable journey! The project was taken up long ago but has been delayed and the Chennai Metro City citizens have been eagerly awaiting this!

The MRTS extension project has been pending for several years because of legal hurdles in acquiring a 500 m stretch of land near the St. Thomas Mount railway station.

The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Southern Railway informed that since the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) had handed over the land, foundation work for the elevated tracks would begin soon and be completed in 18 months.

Adambakkam and Puzhuthivakkam railway stations have already been completed along with a portion of the track work. The Commissioner of Railway Safety would inspect the stations and amenities before services are launched.

The CHIEF PRO of Southern Railways further added that THE MRTS WOULD BE INTEGRATED WITH BOTH THE SUBURBAN AND THE METRO RAIL SERVICES as explained above!

In this regard, a senior CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) officially confirmed that the land had been handed over to Southern Railway, and all legal issues had been sorted out. He informed:

“A case was pending in the Supreme Court regarding the compensation amount with a few owners. It was dismissed on Thursday. Even before the final ruling was pronounced, the Supreme Court had given the green signal to go ahead with the land acquisition.”

Further in this regard, the Supreme Court has dismissed the case impending the acquisition of land near St. Thomas Mount station.

As such, the Southern Railway plans to link the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Velacherry to St. Thomas Mount railway station by 2022, bringing to an end the long-delayed extension project.
