The Covid-19 infections have been leading to many eye related disorders and many residents are showing hesitancy to visit the eye doctor. This was according to the doctors at the famous Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in Chennai.

After the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been a 5 times increase in the number of mature cataract cases and dry eyes issues reported in their hospitals. This was brought to light by Dr. Amar Agarwal, chairman of Agarwal Hospitals Group. As many people did not get their eyes checked in the early stages of cataract due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a jump of 50percent people with mature cataracts in the last quarter of 2020 from less than 10percent who had cataracts in 2019.

The patients have failed to come up for their regular eye checkups and this has led to worsening cases of existing glaucoma issues. It was later highlighted by Dr. Ashvin Agarwal, ED of the group that the lack of timely treatment had increased the morbidity in many patients. He cited an example of a patient who got eye pressure and partial vision loss after he had delayed his cataract surgery.

The online meetings, classes etc have resulted in more number of persons with computer vision syndrome and dry eyes issues etc. The people have been using their electronic gadgets in excess during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was as per S. Soundari, head of medical services at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital. She concluded that those using gadgets must take a break from looking at the screen for every 20 minutes.
