Next time, before you go to a public toilet in Chennai make sure that you have got the correct change!!

It is now revealed that the free to use public toilets have now become pay and use facilities and this has been causing issues for the public.

Pondy Bazaar in T. Nagar is a busy locality with many commercial buildings as well as residential buildings. In this busy place in Chennai, people use toilets present in the hotels and in the commercial establishments instead of the corporation run public toilets. The reason for this is due to public toilets remaining locked or the amount being demanded for its usage. The truth is that the political parties have posted a representative outside the public toilet for collecting an amount from Rs 2 to Rs 10 and inspite of this the toilets are not maintained well.

It was brought out by a former councillor of T. Nagar that this has been taking place for several years and the corporation has been ignoring the illegal collection of user fees.

As per a senior engineer belonging to GCC in many locations in Chennai the illegal collection of user fee has been taking place. He added that the GCC had taken action on the complaints. It must be noted that in north Chennai the toilets that are contracted collect user money.

It was later mentioned by a social worker belonging to T. Nagar that the most common excuse that was given for collecting user fee was regarding purchase of cleaning material and salary for staff maintaining the toilets. He explained about how most of the staff were contracted and how the collection of user fees was illegal. It is worthy to note that the corporation has been requesting Chennai toilet maintenance board to look after the entire infrastructure plus maintenance.
