Chennaites not wearing facemasks- Public health officials highly concerned now.

It is shocking but true!! Not everyone in Chennai is wearing facemasks now as they find it uncomfortable. The numbers of Coronavirus cases have been declining in Chennai but the officials have warned the residents not to let the guard down. It is well known that wearing facemasks is one of the important norms to avoid Covid-19 infection. Over the last few months, compliance with the facemasks have reduced in Chennai.
Many residents either do not wear the facemasks or they pull their masks down their chin in the public places like markets etc. This has been happening while travelling in the buses and in the shared autos also. There is a distinct lack of adherence to the mask rule in some parts of Chennai and in many other districts. This was pointed out by Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary of Tamil Nadu.
He threw light on the campaigns that were carried out to point out the importance of wearing facemasks. The chain of transmission of Covid-19 got broken in Chennai when the residents wore face masks. This happened when Coronavirus was at its peak in the Chennai city. The cultural, political and many private gatherings did not follow the facemask wearing norm whereas adherence was good in hotels and in the shops. He concluded that the transmission of Covid-19 is not yet fully over and people must keep this on their minds.
According to Prabhdeep Kaur, deputy director of ICMR-NIE, we feel that the face mask use might be declining due to the low risk perception as Covid-19 cases are low. She hinted about a few clusters that have been reported from the districts and how wearing masks is important. The shocking truth is that there has been a resurgence in the Coronavirus cases in many countries now with new variants. It is therefore important that we must follow Covid-19 norms even now.
