Overcrowding, classrooms shortage etc now causing huge concerns for the Chennai schools

On 8th of February, around 19 lakhs students belonging to the classes 9 and 11 would be going to their classes in the schools in TN as the schools would be reopened on that day. There are now concerns regarding overcrowding plus shortage of classrooms and teachers workloads.
It must be noted that in each classroom there must be only 25 students and this was according to the rules of standard operating procedure. It is known that since 19th January the schools have reopened for the students studying in the classes 10 and 12 in TN. Till now, the classes have been split for the purpose of having students in additional classrooms and more teachers have been allotted. The issue now is that there might not be enough classrooms and teachers for the students of classes 9 and 11.
Mr. G.J. Manohar, principal of MCC Higher secondary school in Chetpet spoke about how starting classes 9 and 11 meant there would be an additional 750 students inside the school campus. Splitting the classes would need additional teachers. He concluded that a shift system has been planned to avoid excess students inside the school campus at a given time.
According to the principal of ZION Matriculation higher secondary school in Tambaram, there would be too much workload for the teachers as they would be needed to take classes for all 7 periods instead of just 4 periods now. He mentioned that conducting classes for 7 periods wearing facemasks would be a challenge for the teacher.
It was pointed out by Mr. P.G. Subramaniam, principal of Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram in Kilpauk that logistics must be taken into account including number of teachers and number of classrooms etc. He added that the teachers have been taking online classes for the students of classes 1 to 8 and it would be considered before reopening the schools. In the schools, it would be tough to maintain social distancing and alternate working days would be very important. This was stated by a headmaster belonging to Chennai based school.
It is learnt that some schools are confident of conducting classes following the prescribed protocols as they have completed online classes for the board exam students.
As per the principal of IIT M based Vana Vani Matriculation Higher secondary School, the syllabus for the classes 10 and 12 have been completed, self study and revision tests would be conducted for the students .
