Southern Chennai residents suffered a lot on Tuesday night as places like Sholinganallur, OMR, Medavakkam, Perumbakkam and Velachery had power outages for a few hours.

It must be noted that fire broke out at 230/110 KV KITS Park substation at Perumbakkam and this led to power outage. It was later mentioned by a source belonging to Tangedco that a fire broke out in a power transformer at KITS Park substation in parts belonging to south Chennai.

At the Perumbakkam substation, 2 transformers got damaged due to the major fire that lasted for an hour. One of those transformers was completely gutted. Fire and rescue personnel played their part in putting off the fire and the fire was quenched around 11:30 pm. This was according to some sources. As per an officer, it was clear that the fire began at one transformer and spread to another leading to power outage. Information gathered was that back feeding of 110KV lines were arranged for many HT customers like WIpro, CTS, HCL, Ford, Velachery and Sholinganallur.

For ensuring power supply to the customers, back feeding was arranged from other substations despite the major fire accident. This was pointed out by the officials. It is now said that work on rectifying the transformers would begin soon.
