To monitor water tanker trips, MWD to use API system

Many violations take place in the water supply by the water tankers in Chennai and the public have been finding it difficult. This issue would be sorted out soon.

The Chennai metro water department or MWD would be implementing an application programming interface or API based integrated system to monitor water tankers and track violations in the trips.

For the project, tenders have been floated by MWD and bidders have been sought out for the automated tracking system to regulate the operations of water tankers.

It is now said that an API based system would provide a common platform for monitoring operations at the filling stations in Chennai. The movement of water tankers would be tracked easily. This was mentioned by an officer belonging to MWD. It must not be forgotten that earlier MWD had installed smart card based water dispensers in its 191 filling points in the city of Chennai. Here, just specific amounts of water would be dispensed once the water tanker driver swipes the smart card.

By this new interface, there would be full-fledged operation and monitoring of smart card based online systems with GPS and water level sensors to be installed in the lorries. It is brought to light that the API system would transmit and interpret data and take necessary steps.

Fool proof system:

The important piece of information is that the API system would be a fool proof system and would track the lorry movement. It would be possible to find out the unauthorised trips made by the water tankers. This was according to an official belonging to MWD. He explained about how when any theft of water or abnormal trips were found out, then the smart card would be blocked. Point is computerised bills would be generated.

As many as 575 tankers would have this new API based integrated system and the contractor chosen for this would have to carry out operation plus maintenance for a time of 3 years. Work orders for the lorries would be issued by the MWD in the near future for the purpose of hiring lorries for a time of 3 years. It is known that currently 3900 trips are being operated daily and this includes street supply too. Implementation of this new project would be carried out in this forthcoming summer season. The number of trips made by the water tankers has reduced. Even in the core places of Chennai tankers make up to 5 trips every day.
