On Wednesday, 6th January 2020, the feedback session about reopening of the schools in TN was taken. Truth is that the majority of the parents were interested in sending their children to the schools.

They were worried about the new mutant strain from the United Kingdom that has been spreading now. The parents expressed different types of fear regarding their kid’s safety amidst this newly spreading virus strain from the UK.

It must be remembered that in the first week of November the TN government had asked the schools including private institutions to conduct feedback sessions about the reopening of the schools. At that time, the reopening of the schools was postponed indefinitely because the parents were not willing to send their kids to the schools.

There were many demands for the reopening of the schools especially for the classes 10 and 12 after Pongal vacations. This has made the school education department seek suggestions from the parents. It is clear that the suggestions from the parents would be fully transparent and this was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the school education department.

The authorities of the private schools have been clearly told not to force the parents to sign forms regarding sending their kids to the schools. It was pointed out by Mr. P.K. Illamaran, president, TN Teachers Association, that opinions were different from one parent to another. It must be taken into account that some parents wanted the schools to function on a rotational basis whereas other parents do not want to send their kids to the schools. Most parents were of the view that physical classes were better than the online classes.

Fear regarding new mutant strain from UK:
The parents were willing to send their kids to the schools but feared about the new mutant strain from the UK. This was according to Mr. S. Arumainathan, president, TN Students Parents Welfare Association. Only after the vaccination drive, many parents wanted the schools to reopen and few parents wanted the schools to just board exams for classes 10 and 12.

More than 90% of the parents want the schools to reopen at the earliest and this was brought out by Mr. K.R. Nandhakumar, general secretary of TN Nursery, Primary, Higher Secondary and CBSE Schools Association. A parent of a school student from Pammal in Chennai spoke about how the students were in dilemma about the schools reopening. She explained how the classes were important and how fear of viruses was also there.
