Lakes in Chennai are full of water - No water scarcity in this summer for sure

There won’t be any water scarcity issue in Chennai as the lakes are brimming and Chennai has been receiving Krishna water. The water scarcity problem experienced by the Chennai residents in the year 2019 would be a thing of the past.

Chennai city requires 1 TMC of water every month and this was mentioned by an official belonging to the MWD or CMWSSB. He explained about how the water storage present now would last till the NE monsoon sets in.

In the year 2019, the lakes in Chennai went totally dry and due to this the MWD was forced to draw water from the agricultural wells and even tried bringing water on railway wagons. The total capacity of the 5 lakes that supplies water to Chennai is 11757 mcft and the combined storage of these 5 lakes on Monday was at 10,908 mcft.

Truth is that Poondi lake is now 97.7% full (having water storage of 3135 mcft against a total capacity of 3231 mcft). In the same manner, Cholavaram Lake has got storage of 877 mcft against a total storage of 1081 mcft.  Against the total capacity of 3300 mcft Red Hills Lake has now got water storage of 3155 mcft. The total storage capacity of Thervoy Lake is 500mcft and it has now got water storage at 394 mcft.

It must be noted that the Red Hills Lake is now 95.6% full of capacity and Chembarambakkam Lake is now 91.8% full of water.  On Monday, Kandaleru-Poondi canal (that brings Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoirs in AP to Poondi) was having an inflow of 722 cusecs at the border in TN. The water is being released to Red Hills and to supply Chennai city as the Poondi reservoir is full. The state of TN should get 12TMC water every year and this was as per the Telugu-Ganga agreement.
