The recent twin cyclones like Nivar and Burevi have brought huge amounts of rainfall in Chennai and in TN. The latest news is that the heavy rains have increased the storage in the Chennai reservoirs to nearly 10,000 mcft (highest in the last 10 years).

Thanks to Thervoy Kandigai, 5th lake to be opened last month the storage in the reservoirs would cross 10000 mcft soon. On Sunday morning, Poondi , Sholavaram, RedHills, Chembarambakkam and Thervoy Kandigai combined storage was at 9963 mcft. This was according to the data from CMWSSB or metro water/MW. Before the morning of Monday, the storage would cross 10000 mcft, the first time since the year 2010. This was as per some water managers.

It must be recalled that in 2015 and in 2017 Chennai faced floods and the combined storage was less than this level. The water managers have been forced to release water from Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Red Hills due to the situation this year. Information collected is that Chennai city’s drinking water storage capacity is 11757 mcft and this includes the newly created lake. One reservoir that is biggest and has got the highest storage is Chembarambakkam. The full capacity is 3645 mcft and the lake has 3223 mcft water. Truth is even after the water was released it has got 89% storage. The total capacities of Red Hills and Poondi are 3300 mcft and 3231 mcft respectively and they have 2996 mcft and 2867 mcft respectively now.

With the total capacity of 1081 mcft, Sholavaram has now got 650 mcft and Thervoy Kandigai has now 227 mcft. It must be taken into note that this Thervoy Kandigai has got total capacity of 500 mcft. As per an official belonging to the MWD it was confirmed that the present storage of water is sufficient to supply drinking water to the residents of Chennai in the summer 2021.

He explained how withdrawing water from Thervoy Kandigai hasn’t yet started. It is true that the water supply now is met by 4 other lakes. From the 700MLD, city water managers have increased the daily supply to 830 MLD is known.
