Prospects for heavy rains in the state due to low-pressure zone over the Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure zone is set to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal on 23rd November. Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rains in several districts in the State of Tamil Nadu on 23rd |& 24th November.

The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, Puviyarasan, shared in this regard:

“There is a prevailing cyclonic format on the upper layers of the atmosphere over the southeast Bay of Bengal. This cyclonic format is likely to intensify and transform into a depression zone by 23rd November. Subsequently, a strong depression zone will be formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal.  And will drift towards the northwest direction and move towards Sri Lanka and the coastal areas of the State of Tamil Nadu.

Due to the above-mentioned cyclonic format, there are prospects for mild rains in the districts of Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Sivagangai, and Pudhukkottai for 2 days on 21st November (Saturday) and 22nd November (Sunday). As for the other districts, a dry climate will persist.

There are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains with thunder in a few places on 24th November in the 8 Tamil Nadu Districts of Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagappattinam, Thanjavur, Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram.  There are prospects for medium rains in most places in the coastal districts and mild rains in a few places in the interior districts.

As regards the Chennai Metro City, the sky will remain somewhat cloudy. The maximum temperature will be 32 Degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be 24 Degrees Celsius.

Recorded Rainfall As at 8.30 AM on Friday, 20th November, the rainfall recorded in mm Vaippar, Thoothukkudi district- 100, Thirubhuvanam, Sivagangai District and Sivakasi, Virudhunagar District, and Madurai – 40 each, Soorankudi, Thoothukkudi |District, Vainokkam, Ramanathapuram District, Pulippatti, Madurai District – 30.

Warning to fishermen: High-speed winds at 45 kmph to 55 kmph are likely to blow over the ocean regions of southwest Arabian Sea and Central Arabian Sea. So, the fishermen in these regions have been warned NOT to venture into the sea for fishing until 24th November. Apart from this, the fishermen have also been warned not venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal and the coastal regions of the State of Tamil Nadu.
