As announced by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, there were heavy rains for 3 days- especially it poured heavily in the water catchment areas in and around the Chembarambakkam Lake, located near Poonamallee, Chembarambakkam Lake is one of the 4 major water resources for the citizens of the Chennai Metro City.

With this heavy downpour, water filled up quite fast in the lake, which is of 24’ high, and the water level rose quite fast to 21.13’.

As the quantum of rain reduced in the areas Kanchipuram and Sriperumpudhur which are the water catchment areas of the Chembarambakkam lake, the inflow of water to the lake has reduced considerably and presently, the inflow is only  1086 cft per second.

Due to the phenomenon of evaporation, a substantial quantity of potable water is lost. As such, only the recent rains have been the major source of input for this lake.

In case the rains continue, the lake will get filed to its capacity of 24’! So, the Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to let out the excess water when the height reached 22’. But they would undertake this activity only after suitably warning the local citizens who are residents in the regions of the canal and the Adyar and taking all the necessary precautionary action before getting out the excess water.

The residents of Kundrathur, Natham, Thiruneermaali, Thirumudivakkam, Sirukalathur, and Manappkkam low-lying areas have been warned to be alert. However, it has also been announced that there is absolutely no necessity for any panic

In this scenario, as the rains have subsequently stopped, it has been announced that no water will be let out from the Chembarambakkam lake.

The height of water in the Chembarambakkam Lake, which is one of the major drinking water resources for the Chennai Metro City, stood at 21.13’ as on today morning (Tuesday, 17th November). Its capacity is 2889 million cft and the inflow of water, 1086 cft per second.

As the rains have stopped since yesterday night (16th |November), the inflow has reduced. As such, the rate of increase in lake height has come down.

It may be noted at this juncture, the information was floating around that the Chembarambakkam Lake has been opened! However, note that this absolutely false!
