Decrease in the flow of Krishna water to Chennai, storage of 4 reservoirs more than in last year

For the last few days, there has been a decrease in the flow of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh through the Kandaleru Poondi canal. Assurance has been given by the AP officials regarding the flow of Krishna water throughout the year and this was according to some officials belonging to the WRD or Water Resources Department.
It must be taken into account that on Thursday, the Poondi reservoir (where Krishna water gets stored) received 265 cusecs. Since the middle of the September month, Chennai city has till now received 2535 mcft or million cubic feet of Krishna water discharged from the Kandaleru reservoir in AP.
The irrigation needs of AP plus the onset of NE monsoon over TN were cited as the reasons for the decrease in the discharge of Krishna water from AP to Chennai city now.
It was later highlighted by an official that the water released from the Kandaleru reservoir is diverted to tanks all along for irrigation in AP. It must be noted that there is a minimum of 9 branch canals and water is also let out through the outlets of the Kandaleru- Poondi canal. The decrease in the supply of Krishna water would be temporary only.
It must not be forgotten that at a meeting that took place in August the AP officials gave assurance regarding the supply of 4000 mcft of Krishna water to Chennai for a period of 2 months. It is now hoped that after 15th November, the inflow of Krishna water would increase gradually.
The total water storage capacity of the 4 main reservoirs are 11257 mcft and on Thursday these reservoirs had a storage of 6199 mcft that is 55percent of the total capacity. Last year, at this same point of time, the combined storage capacity of the 4 reservoirs was at 2982 mcft.
