In the Chennai city, there is no sync between the public transport and unlock mode now

At present, we could see many MTC bus, taxis and autos lying idle in Chennai now even after the removal of the lockdown restrictions.

The point is that tax dues have made many buses idle and loan related issues have made many cars and autos idle in Chennai. The Chennai city’s public transport has not been in sync with unlock mode. It has been 6 weeks even since the lockdown norms were relaxed in Chennai and more than 30% of the MTC fleet is lying idle at the depots.

The MTC and transport unions have different views with respect to the operation of the MTC buses. It is said that MTC hasn’t got permission from the transport department to operate MTC buses at full capacity.

The transport unions were of the view that pending taxes were responsible for the lesser number of buses being operated now. Payment of road taxes for 700 buses was not carried out by MTC and this was according to the data from the transport department. Important information collected is operating these buses without paying road taxes would lead to penal action.

None of the MTC buses that are being operated now have pending dues and this was mentioned by a MTC official. The rise in the diesel rates plus fall in patronage has been responsible for the transport corporations struggling to meet their expenditures.

Mr. K. Arumugam Nainar, CITU affiliated state transport union pointed out that the government must extend financial support to pay taxes. Point is that the entire fleet of buses might not be operated even if the government allowed them in the coming months by relaxing the norms.

It must be recalled that before Covid-19 daily footfall of MTC was 36lakhs and 3300 buses were operated. Now, many depend on the MTC buses with n suburban trains and with fewer cabs and autos. Truth is that if MTC follows social distancing norms and transports 36lakhs every day then it might need as many as 4300 buses or more. Information is that MTC has removed 1000 buses from daily services and this has led to delay and overcrowding in the existing buses.
