Effective in Tamil Nadu State from today, 1st October: One nation, one ration card scheme!

The State Government of Tamil Nadu implemented the ‘1 Nation - 1 Ration Card Scheme’ from today (Thursday, 1st October), to enable ration cardholders to get their entitled quota of subsidised food-grains from PDS outlets of their choice anywhere in the State.
At the same time, the State Government of Tamil Nadu will ensure biometric authentication for all cardholders in the shops for getting their monthly entitlement.
All shops in the network that have Point of Sales (POS) devices would keep track of the beneficiary’s withdrawal of monthly entitlements.
It may be noted at this juncture that the functioning of intra-State portability was already tried with a pilot project in Thoothukkudi and Tirunelveli districts earlier this year!
According to reports, the State has 2.09 Crores cardholders and has allocated Rs 6,500 Crores towards food subsidy and Rs 400 Crores towards cooperatives for implementing the PDS this fiscal year.
