Fatal accident numbers come down

Posted on: 27/May/2013 3:01:26 PM
The exercise taken up by the Chennai Traffic Police to identify ‘hot spots’ which are accident prone regions, and to take corrective measures, has paid off. The Police Department carried out a survey which identified the spots in the city where accidents most often occur. They then used signals, zebra crossings and speed breakers to reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Says a police official, ‘The number of fatalities has come down by over 90, thanks to the mapping initiative… A classic example is Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), where the number of fatal road accidents has shown a marked reduction. We are conducting a drive against jaywalkers, since haphazard road crossing by pedestrians was found to be a major cause of fatal accidents on the 25-kilometre stretch between Madhya Kailash and Kelambakkam.

‘In some places, the poor road condition was the reason for frequent accidents. We took immediate action to set things right. Where overspeeding is identified as a cause, speed breakers are constructed. A traffic signal has been installed at Mylai Balaji Nagar near Velachery. Traffic cops are joining hands with the Chennai Corporation to remove encroachments that are a hindrance to smooth traffic.’
