No regular traffic on the Port-Maduravoyal elevated road in Chennai

Changes have been made in the alignment of 20km long 4-lane elevated road from Chennai Port Trust to Madhuravoyal. This would just allow the movement of vehicles to and from the port. It is now said that the common users would not be able to use this road.

It must be noted that this 20km long road had obtained CRZ clearance from the Union Environment Ministry after the TN government objected to the earlier alignment.

This had resulted in the stoppage of construction in the year 2012. The elevated road would just have entry and exit ramps inside the Chennai Port premises and end of the corridor. This was as per the new alignment.

From the port near the War Memorial gate, the elevated road was to take off from the port and this was in the old alignment. The road would then snake along the Cooum river till Koyambedu and from there it would travel along NH-4 and had 6 entry and exit ramps.

Common road users would get benefited from the elevated road as the entry ramps were to be provided at Sivananda Salai, College Road, and exit ramps at Kamarajar Salai and Spurtank Road. It is worthy to note that Koyambedu was supposed to have both entries as well as exit ramps.

Mr. P. Raveendran, chairman of Chennai Port Trust did not know about the technicalities of the project as NHAI of India was only executing the work. This reply from Mr. Raveendran was to a question regarding whether the vehicles bound to Port Trust would be allowed to use the road.

According to Mr. Pawan Kumar, regional officer of the National Highway Authority of India, Chennai, the elevated road was only meant for the Port but the public would be benefited as the existing road would be free from freight traffic.
