About 10 days ago, none of the streets in the south Chennai had containment zones. Things are changing fast these days.

Now, few Coronavirus positive cases have been reported on the 5 streets belonging to south Chennai. This has shocked many. As a result, GCC has converted these 5 streets into containment zones on Thursday, 13th August.

It has been revealed by the data belonging to the Chennai Corporation that there are 26 containment zones in the Chennai city. Sholinganallur zone has got as many as 3 containment zones now. There is one containment zone each in Valasaravakkam zone and in Perungudi zone. As a part of a cluster containment plan, the civic body would convert areas and streets with a huge number of Coronavirus cases.

The presence of a huge floating population from the neighbouring districts in the extended zones like Sholinganallur and Perungudi has resulted in the fresh Covid-19 positive cases.

It was mentioned by an official of GCC that the extended zones have been given more importance and the control measures in these extended zones have been intensified. The central Chennai regions have got 22 containment zones and there are 8 containment zones in the Ambattur zone.

It is surprising to mention here that once considered as hotspots for Covid-19 infection Royapuram zone and Tondiarpet zone do not have even a single containment zone now.

On 2nd August 2020, Chennai had56 containment zones and these zones were present in the 5 zones of the central region. There are 875 active Coronavirus infection cases in the Valasaravakkam zone and this was till Thursday morning, 13th August.

The number of active cases in the Perungudi zone stood at 442 and in the Sholinganallur zone was 453. Truth is if the streets in Chennai stop reporting fresh Coronavirus positive cases then the civic body would remove the restrictions in the containment zones.
