For the next 2 to 3 weeks in Chennai, the vegetable prices unlikely to reduce

Vendors have made it clear that the prices of the vegetables in this week would remain stable following an increase in the prices in the last week. The prices are unlikely to come down for another 2 to 3 weeks. The labour issues might even increase the prices slightly of the vegetables in Chennai.

According to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Wholesale Market’s Association, the rains have ceased in TN and in the surrounding places. This has settled the supply issues. The shortage of labourers plus low crop yield this time around has resulted in the high costs of the vegetables.

The effects of Coronavirus infection pandemic are being witnessed at present. The prices of the fruits would also follow a similar trend.

Over the course of last month, the prices for the particular vegetables have risen and fallen down and have settled down to 10 to 15% hike from typical prices. It is common knowledge that the prices of certain vegetables like carrot have increased by almost 200 percent.

Now, some local vendors are expecting the Koyambedu market to reopen again so that they might shift from the Thirumazhisai market. Truth is that the Chennai city and its surrounding districts are opening up now slowly.
