Posted on: 01/Aug/2020 10:29:49 AM
Right from the beginning of the Coronavirus infection pandemic, it was clear that persons having co-morbid conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancers, heart diseases, obesity, chronic ailments, respiratory ailments, etc would have more risk of getting infected with Coronavirus. Deaths have taken place due to uncontrolled levels.

It must be noted that in the state of TN 81.3% of deaths due to the Coronavirus infection have occurred in those with co-morbid conditions. Till 29th July 2020, diabetes and BP have led to 33.6% deaths and this was out of a total of 3297 deaths. This was according to data from the state health department. Fact is diabetes alone has caused 24.29% of deaths, BP 12.59% deaths. Other co-morbid conditions have been responsible for 11.56% of deaths. Few persons who did not have any co-morbid conditions also passed away due to Covid-19 infection, just over 18%.

Age factor

The data revealed the age-wise distribution of deaths and the fact is those persons above the age of 60 are a definite additive risk factor. Some senior citizens who had both BP, as well as diabetes, have passed away due to Coronavirus infection (38.8%).

Dr. V. Mohan of Dr. Mohan Diabetes Speciality Centre expressed his views. He said that the relation between co-morbid conditions and deaths reflect the global trend. He explained that a person above the age of 60 must not be exposed to the infection at any cost. He shed light on how the levels of Hba1c

(3 months average blood sugar) of more than 8.5 could lead to many complications and deaths. Point is lower levels of Hba1c refers to the patient doing well.

It was later mentioned by Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary that uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension could lead to issues. By keeping the metabolic parameters under the control, it is possible to reduce the risk of getting a Coronavirus in those with co-morbid conditions.
