Ever since the lockdown began in Tamil Nadu for containing Coronavirus infection, the crimes against girls have become more. This has been pointed out by some social activists and politicians.

Recently, the state of TN woke up to the shocking news about sexual violence against a 7 year old girl in Pudukottai and brutal murder of a 14 year old teen girl at Trichy. It was highlighted by the founding president of TN Muslim League, Mr. V.M.S Mustafa that when compared to the same period in 2019, from April to July, crimes against girls have increased this year. He added that the TN government must take measures to prevent such heinous crimes against girls.

There were many instances where the girls have suffered not from the outsiders but from their own family persons. These incidents have shocked many. Examples are Vazhapadi in Salem district where a girl was molested by her own father and uncle plus another example in Karipatti where a girl was molested by her uncle.

These incidences prove that young girls get molested by their own family persons rather than by outsiders. Courts must fast track the cases against these affected girls and this was according to some social activists.

As per M. Kalaiselvi, founding president, Tamil Nadu Swadeshi Women Protection Association, it was clear that most of the cases become weak and the accused get more chances for acquittal. She explained about how not more than 30% against the girls get reported and how in those cases acquittal rate was less than 10%.
