The students studying in the government schools in the state of Tamil Nadu have now got a reason to rejoice.

On Monday, 15th June 2020, TN State Cabinet approved an ordinance envisaging 7.5% horizontal reservation in the state government’s quota of MBBS/BDS seats for the students belonging to the government higher secondary schools.

The proposed ordinance would be sent to the Governor, Mr. Banwarilal Purohit for assent. It is worth mentioning that the quota within quota covers government seats in private colleges also.

The students belonging to the government schools should have qualified in the NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. This would be the prerequisite for qualification.

Point is the proposal was speculated to be a 10% quota for the government school students. It is now revealed that the Cabinet chaired by the chief minister of TN Mr. E. Palaniswami had kept it to 7.5% as it felt that the quantum specified was reasonable.

The decision taken by the Cabinet was based on the recommendations made by a panel that was headed by former HC Judge Mr. P. Kalaiyarasan. In the last week, the panel’s report was submitted to the CM. The cognitive gap among students studying in the government schools has been observed by the panel.
