Sabarimalai Temple: Corridors to be opened on 14th June! Devotees not permitted!

The State Government of Kerala has decided that the devotees will not be permitted to participate in the special poojas to be conducted during the Tamil Calendar Month of Aani in the famous Sabarimalai Lord Sri Ayyappan temple.

Kerala State Minister Kadagampalli Surendran informed this after acceding to the appeal from temple Tantri.

In fact, devotees have not been allowed in the temple premises right after the poojas which were performed in the Tamil Calendar month of Masi.

The temple corridors were opened as per the scheduled dates for Poojas/special prayers as per the scheduled dates and the poojas/prayers were performed as practiced.

In this situation, for the prayers/poojas for the Tamil calendar month of Aani, the temple corridors were to be opened on 14th June and it had been announced that the devotees might be permitted with regulations.

However, with the impact/intensity of coronavirus affection reaching higher levels, the temple’s Tantri Kandararu sent a letter to the commissioner of the Dewaswom Board that it would not be wise to allow devotees in this situation. So, ‘virtual queue registration was not done.

Subsequently, an emergency meeting was organized headed by the State Minister Kadagampalli Surendran regarding this issue. The president of the Dewaswom Board Vasu Tantri and other senior officials participated in this emergency meeting.

After the meeting, the minister shared with the press:

“The government accepts the proposal of the Tantri that devotees should not be permitted during these times of increasing impact/intensity of the coronavirus. So, devotees will not be permitted during the Poojas/prayers conducted in the Tamil calendar month of Aani. Only the rituals/events will be performed as per tradition. Devotees will not participate.

The Congress party and BJP raised the question of why the temples are not opened even as the Brandy shops are open!  However, after conducting a discussion with the religious leader and arriving at an accepted decision, the Kerala State government decided to open the temples as advised and guided by the central government.

As such, even if other state devotees visit with COVID-19 negative certificate, if anyone had been affected, it would land in a problem for the Sabarimalai Lord Sri Ayyappan temple administration! So, it has been decided that THE DEVOTEES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED FOR AANI POOJAS/PRAYERS.”

When Tantri Kandararu asked Mahesh Mohanaru whether there was any pressure from the meeting to allow the devotees, he replied, there were no such p pressures.  He just emphasized that in the given situation, another review is really needed. So, there is no difference of opinion between the Kerala State government and the Sabarimalai Ayyappan Temple Dewaswom Board.
