Travelling by buses to cost more due to lower occupancy rate, MTC services doubled

Posted on: 19/May/2020 10:19:07 AM
The lock down has been extended till 31st May 2020 in TN. It is now said that the buses would be running with just 50 percent capacity for the sake of social distancing. Point is when the restrictions get lifted travelling by omni buses would become costly.

To make up for the loss of revenue due to less number of passengers, the ticket rates would be increased. This was as per an owner of private bus.

He then spoke about how currently the bus fare is Rs 1.60 per kilometre and how the rate would be doubled to Rs 3.2 per km as less number of passengers would be allowed to travel. He added that there is no other option available except to increase the rates of the bus tickets.

Normally a bus ticket for the passengers from Chennai to Coimbatore in an omni bus would cost Rs 700 but post lock own it would cost Rs 1400. It was later mentioned by a senior transport official that there would not be any increase in the ticket rates of transport corporation buses inspite of the fact that social distancing would lead to loss in the revenue. It must be taken into account that already the corporation buses have been running under losses due to low fares.

Important information is the break even cost could be varying between Rs 45 per km and Rs 50 per km for the corporations. This break even cost would be increased by Rs 10 to Rs 15 per km due to social distancing norm. The lock down has affected the private bus operators and this was according to Mr. A. Anbhazhagan, general secretary, All Omni Bus Owners Association.

From Monday, 18th May 2020, MTC has doubled the bus services to the secretariat as the government offices have started to function with 50 percent of employees.
