7 water bodies in and around Chennai now restored by CII

As many as 7 water bodies located in and around Chennai have got a new life now.

At a cost of Rs 2.2 crores through its Southern R egion Water Aliance Initiative, CII or Confederation of Indian Industries had restored 7 water bodies in and around Chennai. Various activities of restoration are mechanised cleaning of lake-floor bed, bunds strengthening plus others like beautification by laying pathway, fencing with grill or wall structures and plantation around water body.

A memorandum of understanding or MoU was signed between CII and state government focusing on Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts with support from GCC and district administrations. As per Mr. Ravi Sam, chairman CSR and Affirmative Action Sub-Committee, CII Southern region and managing director, Adwaith Lakshmi Industries.

Grundfos Pumps India Pvt Ltd supported the restoration of Gangaiammankulam in Injambakkam, Chennai and it covered an area of 3.8 acres. After rejuvenation, the storage capacity of the water body rose up to 50 lakh litres. Danfoss Industries was responsible for the restoration of Thamaraikulam in Oragadam spread across 1.7 acres. 

Gmmco Ltd played its role in the rejuvenation of Karapakkam based Karumanchavadikulam, Madipakkam based Rettakuttai and Perumbakkam based Uthukulam.  It is important to mention that the total area covered for restoration of three water bodies was 4.6 acres. From the original state, the water table around these water bodies have increased to 40 percent now after the restoration works.

It is now brought out by Mr. Ravi Sam that in coming years focus would be to build heritage museums in Coimbatore, Cuddalore etc.
