If you have been too important stretches like Nelson Manickam Road, G. N. Chetty Road, Anna Nagar, Velachery, Adyar, Villivakkam etc, then you would have noticed paving machines stationed there.

Across the city of Chennai, there are many damaged roads present. Corporation of Chennai has begun relaying of these damaged roads in the above-said stretches in Chennai city.

An official belonging to the corporation opened out on how paving machines have been despatched to 50 locations in Chennai city and how the relaying work would start soon. Metro water projects were also responsible for damaging many roads in Chennai and these roads would also be restored

At an estimated amount of Rs 700 crores, the corporation has also started to relay more than 4000 damaged roads and this would be in addition to the work on major bus route roads. Under TURIP or Tamil Nadu Urban Roads Infrastructure Programme 2019-20, corporation had received the approval of Rs 338 crores.

There are roads that were damaged due to underground sewage and water supply improvement schemes and also due to natural calamities. This project would improve these roads in Chennai city. The project sanctioning committee of TURIP has accorded approval.

Corporation in the year 2019 submitted a proposal for relaying bus route roads and other interior roads that were damaged due to the execution of improvements to the footpaths/development of cycle tracks etc. TURIP’s grant of Rs 120 crores and Rs 100 crores by Chennai Corporation was also finalized with the condition.

As per the condition, corporation council’s resolution must be got before calling for tenders plus a common model for bid documents must be adopted while calling for tenders. The monsoon had delayed the work.

It was brought out by some officials that the civic body would also engage a project monitoring consultant by following due procedures as per TN Transparency in Tender Act 1998. For promoting non-motorized transport, infrastructure would be developed by the Special Projects Department of Chennai Corporation. This would be done in addition to road relaying. In another 3 months, most of bus route roads, interior roads, footpaths etc would get relayed.
