New scheme to prevent/reduce beach pollution

Posted on: 07/Jan/2020 12:48:46 PM
The Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner launched the project for the immediate collection/removal of the garbage thrown by the public on the beaches on Monday, 6th January.

The Besant Nagar (Eliots) beach is under the Ward 176 of Adyar Zone under the Greater Chennai Corporation. This is a popular beach where the maximum number of the public visit after Marina Beach. As there are many snacks shop located here, a large quantum of garbage collects every morning polluting the beach by a large extent! There are 15 GCC staff members deployed here along with a garbage collecting machine. Even then, by the evening, there is a rather nasty huge collection of garbage strewn around the beach.

In order to prevent this trend, GCC Commissioner launched yesterday (6th January) the scheme of ‘on-the-spot-removal’ of garbage as and when thrown

Under this latest scheme, 18 GCC Staff are deployed. They will take charge of removing the garbage collected over a distance of 1 km on the shore and the paved road. This staff will work on a rotational basis collecting garbage on the spot from 6.00 AM to 10.00 PM.

The above staff has been trained specially for ‘on-the-spot-removal’ of garbage as and when thrown.

GCC officials expressed confidence that with this imitative, Besant Nagar beach will become a garbage-free area!
