It has been a year since the ban on single-use plastics and non-biodegradable plastic products came into existence in TN.

In the year 2019, the corporation of Chennai had seized as many as 320 tonnes of plastics from various establishments like manufacturers and wholesale dealers etc.

In 2020, the civic body is confident of phasing out the plastic bags that have been used by small establishments. An amount of Rs 90 lakhs has been collected as a fine amount in TN till now.

In the initial few months of time, the raid on the usage of the plastic was in full swing but in the second half of 2019, monsoon preparedness plus other civic infrastructure works had put plastic raids on the back seat. In the last 3 months, a little above 10 tonnes of banned plastics were seized by the officials. The officials have revealed that the smaller establishments were using plastic bags which they had stocked and hence the seizure has been smaller.

It must be noted that just 3 weeks back extensive raids were conducted in the Valasaravakkam zone (Nolambur, Poonamallee High Road, Kundrathur Main Road, Porur etc). Point is 10 kg of plastic was seized from about 14 establishments in these places in Chennai.
