To reduce traffic congestion in Poonamallee plans proposed

Posted on: 26/Dec/2019 9:36:03 AM
In Chennai, Poonamallee is very important to place with heavy traffic congestion. The pedestrian footfall is high here and these have been creating many issues is known.

It is now brought out that the final draft report of Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Chennai Metropolitan Area or CMA has identified Poonamallee for the area-wise traffic management plan. This is based on land use, increasing traffic conditions plus a large volume of pedestrians, accidental spots etc. It is said that the developments are concentrated around the Poonamallee bus terminus.

On the Avadi-Poonamalle highway at the entrance of the present bus terminus, dense commercial developments are present. It is known that Poonamallee connects to Porur and Thirumazhisai on the east and west via EVR Periyar Salai (Poonamallee High Road). In the same way, Poonamallee also connects Avadi and Mangadu on the north and south.

At 1.2 km from the bus terminus, ORR or outer ring road intersects P.H. Road. Important point is after the completion of dedicated ORR till Minjur northbound freight traffic would come down.

It has been revealed by the report that commercial activities have encroached the pedestrian facilities on EVR Periyar Salai and the report also touched upon the absence of footpath in the internal roads. Important information collected is 2 roads have been proposed as one-way streets. The point to be noted is the Theradi Street present at the exit side of the bus terminus is small to handle the 2-way traffic. There is a lot of choking in Theradi Street due to heavy traffic. This has resulted in chaotic driving conditions due to on-street parking.

From bus terminus exit to Poonamallee High Road, unidirectional traffic has been proposed and traffic would be on other direction on the temple road from Poonamallee High Road towards Nambi Street. For traffic disobedience, violations have to be penalised. The report also shed light on the need to have an organised parking lot.

By this, the street parking issue could be prevented. It must be taken into account that few parking lots are operational at the Poonamallee bus terminus and there are no parking lots in or near the commercial places.
