For more than a year now, traffic along this famous bridge has been closed is well known. The point to be noted is demolition of this bridge has been pending because of the delay in shifting the power transmission network passing through the bridge.

According to the letter, demolition works would start on 3rd January and Tantransco must complete the shifting of power lines before the end of this 2019. It was later revealed by a senior official belonging to Tantransco that almost 90% of work including construction of high tension towers at Salt Cotaurs, installation of the new power line for transmitting power from Manali to Mylapore and construction of a substation has been completed. The rains have delayed some of the works and soon the new electricity lines would be changed. This was also confirmed by the senior official.

Information got is railways department is planning to increase long distances services from Central station hence it wants to demolish the existing structure to build a new and wider bridge to increase the tracks.

For many vehicles proceeding from Sowcarpet and Broadway to places like Otteri and Vepery, the rail over bridge or ROB linking Wall Tax Road with the Sydenhams Road is an important access road is known. It must not be forgotten that last month, the Chennai traffic police installed barricades and put up banners to prevent pedestrians and motorists from using this dilapidated Elephant Gate Bridge.
