The superb piece of news for the people of Chennai and TN is in the next summer there might not be water crisis. This is due to the fact that the active NE monsoon has filled the reservoirs in the state of TN plus the irrigation tanks, etc.

Important information is major reservoirs in TN have a combined storage of 91% as against a capacity of 198 thousand million cubic feet or tmcft.

Till Wednesday, TN received 41.7 cm rainfall a departure of 13% from the normal from NE monsoon. This has been confirmed by the date belonging to the meteorological department. In places such as Nilgiris, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Tuticorin, Coimbatore and Sivaganga, the monsoons triggered more rains when compared to other places.

It was later pointed out by Mr. Radhakrishnan, commissioner of revenue administration and disaster management, that rainfall has come down and there is possibility of another round of regular northeast monsoon activity that must be monitored till the end of the month.

The reservoirs are being monitored by the state emergency operation centre round the clock and then it transmits the messages received from revenue and PWD to the collectors. It is important to note that the Stanley reservoir of Mettur continues to be at full storage level of 93.47 tmcft for nearly a month. On 13th August, sluice gates were opened and it is revealed that since then the reservoir has touched full level two times. Information is inflow to reservoir stood at 8735 cusecs and outflow 8000 cusecs.

An official of PWD spoke about how there would not be drinking water crisis in the summer months if the reservoirs and tanks get filled at this rate.

Point is Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki district in Kerala that supplies water for 5 southern states is half full and when compared to the full capacity of 6 tmcft, Vaigai dam is at a level of 5.3 tmcft.  In Tirunelveli is present Papanasam dam and it is nearly full now and Manimuthar is steadily filling up.

In Kanyakumari district is present Pechiparai and Peruchani dams and these are brimming just similar to the Parambikulam- Aliyar group of dams of Western Ghats.
