In Chennai, roads to have new names soon

The important piece of news that has emerged out now is Chennai Corporation would be renaming roads in the city. It has passed a resolution to rename one of the largest stretches.
The point to be noted is the decision to send a proposal to rename a 20.8 km stretch of Mount-Poonamallee-Avadi Road has been taken by the civic body. Soon, this road would be renamed as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Nedunchalai and makeover for this road would be carried out.
It must be noted that the chief minister of TN Mr. E. Palaniswami had already announced the proposal directing the corporation to study the feasibility of renaming the road after the former chief minister of TN, M.G. Ramachandran. This former chief minster’s house is present on the above-said road and hence the proposal was sent.
Point to be noted is the road belongs to the Highways Department and this road has been proposed to be renamed by Chennai Corporation after the state government gave permission to the corporation commissioner to carry out the name change. Information is the civic body has been clearing garbage along only 4 km of the road. To install new name boards along the road, the civic body has asked Valasarawakkam zonal officer. The stretch would be redesigned with better pedestrian facilities, utilities, street furniture, and wider carriageway, etc only after renaming has been done.
A study would be conducted by the civic body and other line agencies along the stretch to access civic issues due to traffic issues and inadequate parking space. It must not be forgotten that in the year 2010 civic body led by DMK Mayor Mr. Subramanian announced a proposal to rename as many as 50 roads that were named after foreigners.
It is worthy to note that the roads were proposed to be renamed after the Tamil scholars and those who made significant contributions to the Tamil literature. In 2011, this proposal was shelved. The proposal was revived once again after 2 years by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy. Information is Halls Road was renamed as Tamil Salai. Others like Frazer Bridge Road in Georgetown and Montieth Road were renamed as TNPSC Road and Red Cross Road respectively.
