Increasing price trend for small (sambar) onions!

As the quantity of onion arriving in Tamil Nadu has reduced considerably, the price of onion has been shooting up here. Small (sambar) onion is presently sold at Rs. 120 per kg!

The growth/yield of onion grown in the state of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra had been severely affected (due to incessant rains, etc). The crops were submerged in water. This had drastically affected the quantity of onion arriving at Tamil Nadu.

Generally, it is the trend that about 80 truck-loads of onion would be transported to Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market every day. However, presently, only 40 truck-loads of onion reach Koyambedu nowadays.

At the start of last month, the (big) onion (known as ‘Ballari’) was sold at Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 per kg. The small onion was sold at Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 per kg.

As the quantity of arrival of onion started getting lesser, the price, in return, has been gradually increasing day-by-day.

Presently, the big onion is sold presently at the Koyambedu wholesale market at Rs. 50 to Rs.6 5 per kg as per quality. This is the wholesale rate. However, the traders who sell on retail charge Rs. 80 to Rs. 90 per kg.

It is gathered that the small onion is sold in retail at Rs. 100 to Rs. 120 per kg. This price differs from one area to another!

However, the public has received a sudden jolt on this steep rise in onion process!
