In Tamil Nadu, the groundwater level rises by 3 metres now

The rainfall during the SW and NE monsoon plus the installation of rainwater harvesting RWH structures by both government and public have increased the groundwater table by 3 metres now when compared to the corresponding period in 2018.
After collecting data of about 1286 observation wells in TN, it was found that the groundwater level stood at 14.5 m recently. It must be noted that in 2018 the groundwater level was 17.5 metres. This was according to an official statement made by TWAD or Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. Every year, in the months of January and May, the reports are prepared is known.
It was mentioned in the release that the restoration of water bodies (kudimaramath) and due to the efforts of the state government as well by private institutions, general public etc in setting up RWH structures, the groundwater level has increased significantly. In the year 2018, TN received 811.07 mm rainfall compared to the normal of 960 mm and in 2019 TN had received 693 mm rainfall till now.
Information is Tirunelveli recorded excess rainfall whereas Kancheepuram, Dindigul and Madurai districts received deficient rainfall and other places got normal rainfall. When compared to 2018, reservoirs like Mettur, Bhavanisagar, Papanasam, Pechiparai, Sholayar, Parambikulam and Aliyar have got combined storage of an additional 31 tmcft now.
The point to be taken into account is the board has been supplying 1900 million litres of water per day through 556 combined water supply schemes without any interruption. In the past, the agency has installed 12568 RWH structures due to increasing population. It had also set up industrial units plus expanded urban areas etc. In the rural as well as in urban local bodies, similar RWH structures have been put and this was as per the release statement from TWAD.
To improve water supply, the board had directed its engineers to check the leaks in the pipelines immediately. It is important to mention that the board had sent hydro- geomorphological maps to all collectors, rural development departments and to its engineers for the sake of improving the water resources plus to set up RWH structures.
